Job Shadow ReportJames Gerolimos
Capstone/ 5th period Mrs. Bachnack October 24, 2012 Job Shadow During my job shadow I had gotten to view the classroom from a perspective other than the normal one I have. Since I am normally the student in the classroom I don’t get to fully take in the effect that the teacher has on everyone. I could tell that Mr. Bauters is truly passionate about his career as a teacher, and that is what inspires me to want to become one even more. During my time in his class, I had asked Mr, Bauters a group of questions that I had figured would be important for me to know. I had asked him roughly how many hours he works in a typical week and his response was anywhere between 55-65 hours. I like the hours for the job. The only reason they are longer than school hours is because of grading. When I had asked what the worst part of the job is he had told me that is was without a doubt grading. I can clearly see why that is his answer. He says that when a test isn’t on a scantron it takes a while for him to go through each individual paper and grade it, not to mention essays. This job shadow had made me want to pursue the career even more. I liked the vibe I got from the classroom. Normally as a student it is difficult to get a good vibe because you don’t fully understand things, but as a teacher you are the one that knows it and you are there to help students along the way. I don’t necessarily want to be a high school teacher, but I do want to at least be a middle school teacher because I would like students to be a little mature when I have them in class. He had told me that I have to put forth all of my effort because there are actually a lot of teachers that didn’t and they don’t teach as well as they should be. Basically you cannot just put half of your effort in your schooling to become a teacher. I had also asked about the personality traits that someone should have if they want to become a successful teacher. His answer to me was that you should be extraverted, confident, be humorous, have discipline, be creative, and have analytical thinking. I feel as though I have most of these traits. I don’t think that I would need all of them for the kind of teacher I would like to become. I would like to become a math teacher so I don’t think I would need analytical thinking. I enjoyed my job shadow very much. I think it opened my eyes to the career of teaching. After going through it I feel as though it strengthened my will to become a teacher. This has been a very helpful experience. |

Crown Point, IN 46307 November 16, 2012 Mr. Vince Bauters Crown Point High School 1500 S. Main St. Crown Point, IN 46307 Dear Mr. Bauters: Thank you for meeting with me to talk about my job shadow. Being able to job shadow you was very helpful to me. I enjoyed being able to sit in on your class and observe how the students took in everything you said. It is truly remarkable how you can get a different vibe from a classroom when you are not in it as a student. Your answers to my questions have helped clarify what I would need to do to pursue a career in teaching. Thank you again for taking the time to meet with me. Sincerely, James Gerolimos |
